This is no ordinary silk sari; it has not one or two, but 1,64,492 colours in it!
It is also on its way to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Dubbed Mayil Thogai (a peacock's feather) by none other than Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the sari is the creation of Co-optex, the Tamil Nadu Handloom Wevaers' Coopertaive Society, in association with Sirumugaipudur Sri Ramalinga Sowdeswari Handloom Weavers' Co-operative Society in Coimbatore.

As many as 15 skilled weavers wove the sari that has 164 colours in the warp and 1003 colours in the weft, in just 25 days. This was done using 5 Jacquard box and 11,531 Jacquard design cards.

The pallav of the sari has the Madurai Sri Meenakshi Amman Koil, and on the borders are woven the seven woders of the world; the Egyptian pyramid, the Taj Mahal, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower of Paris, the Great wall of China, the Empire State building in the USA and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
Six Mayil Thogai saris, each priced at Rs 40,000, have been made by the artisans so far. Though none of them is on sale, customers can place orders and get one woven for themselves!
