HD DVD continues boldly

HD DVD continues to boldly go where no format has gone before!

The Blu-ray disc format is generally considered to be the highest-selling format where the discs are concerned, picking up steam early in the year. According to Chris Fawcett, vice president of video marketing for the home division of Sony, who said he was quoting numbers from Nielsen Media Research, sales of Blu-ray discs were more than twice the number of HD DVD discs sold, or about 1.7 million.

Toshiba cited a survey conducted by researcher NPD, which claimed that consumers were twice as likely to buy HD DVDs, by 33 percent to 16 percent.

Toshiba said it would issue a firmware update via Ethernet to its existing HD-XA2 and HD-A20 models, enabling them to process 1080p content at 24 frames per second. Sony, meanwhile, announced two new players: the top-of-the-line BDP-S2000ES model, as well as the new BDP-S500. The new BDP-S2000ES and BDP-S500 players will be available this fall.
