Watchout! Yo!
Springboard Research, an IT market research and advisory firm, has announced a study report, which says that mobile TV services in India are growing and are expected to reach $360 million in 2008. The mobile TV service providers would have to deliver on-demand, pay-per-view option to their customers and should avoid a monthly subscription.
Mobile phone users now have the freedom to watch television on regularly basis, by using the mobile TV service. It offers quite a similar experience to that offered by traditional cable or pay TV subscriptions at home.
“Mobile TV marries the two dominant consumption trends of entertainment and mobile telephony in India. The market is ripe for the launch of mobile TV services and we believe that India will have around 122 million mobile TV subscribers within the first year of launch of the service,” commented Ravi Shekkar Pandey, Manager-Syndicate Research, Springboard Research.
It was found that mobile TV subscription can touch the penetration level of 5-6 % of the total subscriber in the first year of operations and 84 % of consumers want to access this service only if it is affordable and easily available. Additionally, approximately 60 % of the same segments of users have shown an interest in watching the same content that is available on television, including news, sports, music videos and game shows.
“Mobile telephone operators will have an advantage over standalone mobile TV operators in that the former already have user subscribing to their value-added services. However, the success of either operator would be dependent on content offered and price charged for the service,” Pandey added.
Currently in the Indian market, Doordarshan is the only mobile TV services provider, but in limited access.
Furthermore, mobile phone manufacturing companies such as Nokia, Spice Telecom, Qualcomm and Samsung have also taken a step to promote the adoption of mobile TV across the nation.

The study suggests that close cooperation between mobile operators and broadcasters will give profitable business models for mobile TV service in the country.
